The INRGIZE NEXUS hackathon, held from September 7-9, 2024, in Tataouine, brought together young talents to develop innovative solutions for the energy transition in southern Tunisia. The event gathered a group of young entrepreneurs specializing in various fields, all focused on strengthening the region’s energy resilience.
Supported by FNUD and NRGI, and implemented by Skills to Succeed and Cleantech 216, the event was made possible with key support from Future Islands.
Southern Tunisia faces significant energy challenges, worsened by climate change and a lack of sustainable energy infrastructure. Areas like Tataouine also struggle with high unemployment rates, adding further complexity. The goal was to create innovative solutions that would not only address the region’s energy needs but also stimulate the local economy while addressing environmental and social issues.
Future Islands played a key role throughout the hackathon, providing personalized mentoring and coaching to the participating teams. Using a collaborative approach, we helped the teams develop sustainable, user-centered solutions. We employed tools such as Design Thinking, the Green Business Model Canvas, and Market Analysis to guide the participants through proven methodologies, ensuring their projects were both viable and economically sound.
The post-hackathon support was equally essential. The three winning teams were given the opportunity to participate in a dedicated follow-up program aimed at refining and implementing their projects. This program provided technical resources, mentorship sessions, and a roadmap for maximizing the implementation of their solutions. Continuous training was also offered to ensure the sustainability and long-term success of the projects.
Additionally, a webinar was organized to discuss the results of the hackathon and the findings from the survey conducted during the event. The webinar highlighted the specific energy challenges in southern Tunisia and sparked a conversation about the solutions needed for a sustainable energy transition.
The impact of the INRGIZE NEXUS hackathon was impressive, with three winning projects recognized for their innovation and potential to address the energy challenges in southern Tunisia:
- Automated Eco-Cleaning System for Solar Panels
- Combining Photovoltaic Electricity Production with Agricultural Production
- Hybrid Photovoltaic Structure (Solar-Wind) in the Form of Stairs
The winning teams received rewards such as training packages from Orange+ and ongoing support from Tatouinspace and Future Islands to continue developing their ideas.
The online webinar allowed for a deeper discussion of the survey results and featured experts and stakeholders from the energy sector. It was a key moment for extending the impact of the hackathon and for engaging in conversations about best practices to enhance the region’s energy resilience.
In summary, the INRGIZE NEXUS hackathon not only generated innovative projects but also sparked crucial discussions about the energy transition in southern Tunisia. It provided young entrepreneurs with the resources and support needed to transform their ideas into impactful, sustainable solutions.
